Subject Heading Updates
What is Subject Heading Updates?
Subject headings are one of the most important parts of a MARC record. People commonly
search by the subject of the book when a title or author search is not sufficient,
and if your subject headings are out of date or inconsistent your patrons will have
trouble finding what they are looking for. Subject Heading Updates fixes these kinds
of problems by converting your old subject headings to the latest headings.
What can Subject Heading Updates do for you?
Subject Heading Updates saves you the trouble of going through thousands of subject
headings to update them manually, a very time consuming and complex process that
you probably don't even have time to think about doing. Now you don't have to think
about it because we've done all the hard work for you!
Having old or inconsistent subject headings can turn you into the human OPAC when
you have much better things to do with your time. Here are a couple of examples
that may sound familiar to you:
- A student can't find a book about fishing that his friend recommended so he inevitably
comes to you for help. You know the book eludes him because all the fishing books
in your library have the old heading of Angling. It's one of those not-so-endearing
little quirks in your records.
- Another student is looking for a good Sue Grafton mystery. Her search for murder
mysteries and crime stories only turns up two books, and she's sure that there are
more. You know that another quirk of your library is that several Sue Grafton books
have suspense novels subject headings.
By keeping your subject headings current, your patrons are ensured they will find
the titles they are looking for. Remember, a kid can't read what a kid can't find.
